Description: Four week rotation, outpatient settings, offered September, October, November, January, February and March. Three students may complete the rotation in a one-month period.
Purpose: Elective for the fourth year medical student to gain exposure to a multidisciplinary practice of Sports Medicine. This exposure includes working with:
- Primary Care Sports Medicine physicians
- Physical Therapists
- Athletic Trainers
- Athletic teams and support staff
- Radiologists
- Orthopedic Surgeons
Goals: The goals for the Sports Medicine rotation include:
- Exposure to a multidisciplinary approach for the practice of Sports Medicine
- Become familiar with common problems encountered in Sports Medicine, their presentation, diagnosis and management
- Learn and refine musculoskeletal physical examination skills
- Become familiar with common procedures used in Sports Medicine (i.e. injection techniques, fracture care, splinting/casting)
Requirements: Medical students will be required to perform the following tasks during their Sports Medicine rotation:
- Office hours with assigned physician(s)
- Attendance at weekly Sports Medicine conferences
- Attendance for training room coverage with their assigned physician
- Attendance at three athletic events over the four week rotation with their assigned physician
- Complete required readings
- Presentation with a written paper on topic of choice at the end of the four week rotation

Didactic sessions: 2nd, 3rd and 4th Wednesdays of each session; 12:00-1:00 p.m. 2nd: Musculoskeletal Exam and Preparticipation Exam (Chapters 1,2,3). 3rd: Upper and Lower Extremity Injuries (Chapters 11,12). 4th: Cervical Spine, Back Injuries; Issues of the Pediatric Athlete (Chapters 10,13,17).
