OSU Sports Medicine Center, in conjunction with Physical Therapy and Athletic Training programs in OSU School of Allied Medical Professions, is proud to announce the implementation of a Clinical Residency Program for Physical Therapists interested in pursuing a career in Sports Physical Therapy. The Residency Program has been accredited by American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
The Program is designed to advance the knowledge and skills of Physical Therapists in 5 main areas:
- Critical Inquiry/Evidence Based Practice
- Educational/Consultation
- Advanced Clinical Skills
- Foundational and Clinical Sciences
- Health Promotion, Fitness and Wellness
The Program is also designed to prepare Residents for successful completion of American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties examinations in Sports Physical Therapy. The program is 15 months in length beginning each year in September. With this unique design, experienced residents will mentor new residents in clinical and academic settings during one overlapping quarter. While slightly longer in length than many residency programs, the program allows residents to take full advantage of the clinical, academic, and research experiences offered at The Ohio State University.
A typical week in the Physical Therapy Residency Program includes: time in mentored clinical practice, non-mentored practice treating a sports patient population, orthopaedic (or gross anatomy) lab instruction in the entry-level PT program, and graduate course work.
Other educational opportunities include weekly resident/fellow conferences with Sports Medicine physicians, quarterly Grand Rounds, orthopaedic and family physician office visits, and a biomechanics research lab experience. Additionally, the Sports Residency program includes 1 quarter working in the OSU Department of Athletics with Division I athletes for residents with an ATC background. Non-ATC credentialed residents will gain on-the-field experience with OSU club sport programs and community outreach events.
