Overview
Thank you for your interest in Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at The Ohio State University. Our program and its resources will provide you the knowledge and skills to excel in the field, whether you go on to become a team physician or a sports medicine specialist in academic Medicine.
The Faculty and Fellows within the Division of Sports Medicine of the Department of Family Medicine and the Department of Orthopaedics are primarily responsible for the care of athletes of both sexes and of all ages who are engaged in numerous types of athletic endeavors, in various degrees of competition. Clinical care is provided at The OSU Sports Medicine Center. The Sports Medicine Fellows assist with the care of more than 900 Division I NCAA athletes in 36 varsity teams at The Ohio State University. This includes practice session coverage, event coverage, training room supervision, and hospital care. The Division of Sports Medicine typically staffs more than 8000 outpatient cases each year for a wide variety of musculoskeletal and general medical problems. The Sports Medicine Fellows also participate in the care of recreational athletes as well athletes at several local high schools.
Structure
The majority of the Fellowship is a one-on-one learning experience. This is accomplished by assigning the Fellow to one of the Sports Medicine Attending Staff on a month-by-month basis. A typical week consists of 2 days of patient care at the OSU Sports Medicine Center, 1 day of training room, 1 day of primary care continuity clinic and 1 day of academic time. Fellows will also be expected to assist in coverage of mass participation community events such as road races.
Accreditation
The Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education.
Duration
The fellowship is one year in length. The program begins on August 1 and terminates on July 31. There is an option for a second year to complete a Masters in Public Health.
Application Procedure
Applications are accepted from residents in family practice, emergency medicine, and internal medicine. The Fellowship program participates in the match program. Applications are accepted beginning in June. The deadline for positions for the 2007-2008 year is September 30, 2006. Interviews are held in October and November each year.
