Sport-Related Concussion: Is Research Driving Clinical Practice?

Recent research has created a new way of thinking about the assessment and treatment of sport-related concussion. Dr Guskiewicz will present trends in concussion management of athletes and offer clinicians research-based recommendations for providing the most comprehensive care of their athletes. He will discuss the most recent findings on neuropsychological and postural stability testing, impact biomechanics, the association between concussion history and risk for future injury and the potential risk of late-life cognitive impairment following repeat concussions.
Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D., A.T.C. is a Professor and Director of the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC.
Over the past 13 years, his researched has focused on sport-related concussion, investigating the effect of this injury on postural stability and neuropsychological function. Dr Guskiewicz is the Research Director for the Center for the Study of Retired Athletes. The focus of the Center’s research is on the long-term neurological and musculoskeletal issues related to playing sport.
Dr Guskiewicz serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Athletic Training and received the 2006 Medal for Distinguished Athletic Training Research He was awarded Fellowship in the American College of Sports Medicine in May 2003, and was recently inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
