Knee Loading Patterns that Endanger the ACL: Insights from Experimental and Simulation Studies
by Ajit Chaudhari, PhD
A Critical Analysis of Current Trends in Developing ACL Injury Prevention Programs
by Bettina Schroeder, PT
Dr Chaudhari is an Assistant Professor in the OSU Department of Orthopaedics and Director of Biomechanical Research at The OSU Sports Medicine Center. Ms Schroeder is a physical therapist at The OSU Sports Medicine Center and directs the ACL Injury Prevention Program.
Recent advances in measuring motion in vivo and in simulating the lower limb now allow much more detailed examinations of the knee loading patterns and motions that occur during high risk activities and their consequences for ACL injury. The presentations will include the results of several in vivo experiments describing the sorts of loads that actually occur in the knee during landing and cutting, as well as how the motion and muscle activity in other parts of the body may influence knee loading. as well as results from dynamic simulations that show how the motions that we observe in vivo affect the ACL and may cause it to rupture. These studies have supported the development of ACL prevention programs, and will continue to guide improvements of prevention and treatment programs to further improve outcomes for patients.
Grand Rounds are held in the Huntington Level of the Jerome Schottenstein Center, on the OSU campus at Olentangy River Road and Lane Avenue [click here for driving directions].
